Bibliographic Information: Cronin, Doreen. (2011). The Trouble with Chickens: A J.J. Tully Mystery. Cornell, Kevin, illustrator. New York, NY: HarperCollins.
Brief Annotation: This book follows a retired rescue dog who has been recruited to solve the mystery of two missing chicks. With the help of the mother hen, JJ, the rescue dog has to use all of his skills to find the kidnapped chickens and discover what is really going on inside of the house.
Grade Level: 2-4
Readers who will like this: Students who like mysteries, students who like animal stories
Rating/Response: 3 This is a good first mystery book for middle grade readers, but I personally didn’t find the story to be that engaging. There is, however, plenty of silly bits that elementary aged children will enjoy.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What is a mystery? Have you ever solved a mystery?
