The Pigeon Wants a Puppy

Bibliographic Information: Willems, Mo. The Pigeon Wants a Puppy. 1st ed. Disney-Hyperion, 2008. Print.

Brief Annotation:  The Pigeon wants a puppy, he really does! He promises to take care of it because he really is a puppy loving pigeon. But after seeing the puppy the pigeon isn’t really sure what to think. Puppies are much bigger and have more slobber than he first anticipated. What will the pigeon do?

Genre: free choice picture

Grade Level: Pre K-2

Readers who will like this: Children who like funny stories, Children who like Mo Willems

Rating/Response: 5 Mo Willems perfectly captures how young children often feel about wanting something. He whines, he pleads, he throws a great big temper tantrum, and when the pigeon finally gets his puppy… he is scared of it. Young children will love to find out what happens next in this wonderful picture book.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What do you do when you really, really want something? Do you think you could take care of a puppy?
