Bud, Not Buddy

Bibliographic Information: Curtis, Christopher Paul (1999). Bud, Not Buddy. New York, NY:  Delacorte Books for Young Readers.

Brief Annotation: Bud Caldwell is a kid on the run, trying to figure out who his father is. With nothing but a clue from his mother (an old poster for a Jazz band) and his suitcase full of secret things, Bud sets off to find his father

Genre: Historical Fiction

Grade Level: Grades 5-6

Readers who will like this: Students who love music, especially Jazz, will love this book. Also, the boys will love the humor used by the author to keep Bud’s spirits up despite the fact that he is a 10 year old out on his own.

Rating/Response: 8/10. Bud is a lovable character and he is a go-getter. The humor keeps the mood light, and you can’t help but root for Bud.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What would it be like to be a ten year old traveling across the country?
